So How 'Bout It?

I mentioned in an earlier post that this past Sunday Steve and I learned how to kill and butcher chickens.  We took pictures, and the friends showing us how to do it took pictures, so we have it pretty well documented.

So how 'bout it- you guys want me to post on how to do it or do you think it would be too gross to endure?

I'd be happy to read about it and see it. Just read a chapter in Fixfire about butching hogs. Fascinating stuff. Never know when it'll come in handy.

Too gross to endure? C'mon. If you're gonna eat it, you should know how to prepare it. What's so gross about chicken innards anyway - apart from the crop, there's not much anatomy there that we don't share with chickens. Are our innards too gross to contemplate? As someone who killed and prepared the weekly chicken from an early age, I can honestly say that it never grossed me out - rather it gave me insights into the connection between the animal and the food on the table, as well as a very good education in vertebrate anatomy.

I say post away, you can always hide the the bulk of it behind a link so if everyone doesn't want to click and see the pictures they'll be hidden.

Of course you should. Anyone who doesn't have the stomach for it can turn the page. Being able to kill and butcher a chicken skillfully and humanely is important to anyone raising them, and every bit of instruction helps.

Go to it.

You should post. It would be helpful for those who might want to harvest their own chickens in the future. Anybody who finds it "too gross" should 1) not look and 2) stop eating chicken. This is simply real life.

I'm interested in hearing your experience and thoughts about the process. A few 'instructional' photos are fine by me.

Would love to see it. I of course realize that sounds gross to some people but it's your blog so I think you should just put a warning and then post away!

I think Root Simple posted something along these lines awhile back, and am sure others have too. Anyone who is doing/ or considering chickens for meat has to know if they can handle it. If they can't, its better to find out this way, than when they have a yard full of chickens!

Please post away! Maybe with a warning...

Post, yes, absolutely.

One of my favorite youtube videos that I've watched over and over is the chicken processing at Joel Salatin's Polyface farms. Would love to see chicken processing on a small scale.

I recently butchered my first chicken since watching my parents do it as a kid, and I learned what to do by reading about it on blogs. Post it! Others are learning from your lessons.
